Philadelphia Chickens
by Sandra Boynton
from Workman Publishing Company
What an event! What a show! It's catchy and quirky. Tuneful and toe-tapping. Exuberant, unexpected, and utterly endearing. It's what happens when you take America's beloved illustrator and children's author and combine her buoyant genius with some of the most talented people on the stage—presenting Philadelphia Chickens!
Created by Sandra Boynton, Philadelphia Chickens is a family musical in a book, bringing together a full-color songbook of 17 1/2 illustrated story-poems with a full-length, fully orchestrated CD of original songs performed by the likes of Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, and Laura Linney, who pleads "Please, Can I Keep It?"—it followed me home. / What exactly it is/ I don't know. Also joining in are Eric Stoltz, Natasha Richardson, Scott Bakula, and two Boyntons, including daughter Caitlin McEwan, who performs a piece that every little listener will relate to—a love song to the chocolate chip cookies that are just out of reach. With the collaboration of composer Michael Ford (known to Boynton fans from Rhinoceros Tap), Philadelphia Chickens is that rarest of kids' musical discs—one whose inimitable lyrics and music make it as sing-along, dance-along, cluck-along for parents as it is for their children.

The Messiah: An Oratorio Complete Vocal Score (G. Schirmer's Editions of Oratorios and Cantatas)
by George Frideric Handel
from Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation
Titles include: All we like sheep; And He Shall Purify; And The Glory Of The Lord; And with His stripes; Behold the Lamb; Behold, and see; But Thou didst not leave; But Who May Abide; But thanks be to God; Every Valley; For Unto Us A Child Is Born; Glory To God(Messiah); Hallelujah!; He Shall Feed His Flock; He Was Despised; He trusted in God; His yoke is easy; How Beautiful Are Feet; I Know Redeemer Liveth; If God Be For Us; Lift Up Ur Heads Ye Mighty Gates; Let all the angels; Let us break their bonds; Lift up your heads; O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings; O death, where is thy sting; People Who Walked In Darkness; Rejoice Greatly Daughter; Since By Man Came Death; Surely He Hath Borne Our; The Lord gave the word; Their sound is gone; Thou Shalt Break Thm W/A Rod; Thou art gone up on high; Trumpet Shall Sound; Why do the nations so furiously; Worthy is the Lamb.
Anyone attending a Messiah sing-along is most likely to fit in when using this old favorite edition. The musicological work has been superseded by Watkins Shaw's edition for Novello, but his piano reductions are idiosyncratic. This piano-vocal score has no measure numbers or rehearsal figures, but the reduction is pianistic in scope. The choral lines are in smaller type but are workable. The price is of course also highly attractive. Listeners who truly love this work may be interested in the full orchestral score--also at a great price--from Dover, edited by Alfred Mann. --William R. Braun
